Which Dog and Cat Foods Publish Phosphorus Levels? 40 Products, Checked

Last updated: August 11, 2026

This page contains affiliate links (PR).

Of the 40 products we checked (26 dog, 14 cat), 25 (16 dog, 9 cat) officially disclosed a phosphorus number. For 5 dog products we haven't yet been able to confirm the nutrition figures, and 1 cat brand simply has no senior-specific line. Where disclosed, phosphorus ranged from 0.4–1.14% for dogs and 0.5–1.1% for cats, but because the reporting basis isn't consistent across brands, a strict side-by-side comparison isn't possible (as of August 2026).

  • 16 of 26 dog products, and 9 of 14 cat products, disclosed a phosphorus number
  • The reporting basis varies by brand — "guaranteed analysis," "analysis value," "dry matter conversion," and so on
  • If your pet's kidney values are a concern, talk to your regular vet before switching foods based on this alone

Once kidney values start becoming a concern in the senior years, it's natural to want to check a food's phosphorus (P) content. But looking across official brand sites, a surprising number of products simply don't publish a phosphorus figure at all.

Before the tables, two things worth knowing.

If your pet's kidney values are a concern, talk to your regular vet before switching store-bought foods.Prescription diets are used under veterinary guidance, so they aren't included in this list.

Phosphorus reporting basis differs by brand (minimum guaranteed value, analysis value, dry matter conversion, etc.). That means a strict numeric comparison isn't possible. This list only confirms whether a number is disclosed, and if so, what it is and on what basis. A lower number isn't automatically "better," nor a higher one "worse."

Products that don't disclose it

These are products where we checked the ingredient panel on the official site (or, where the site wasn't directly reachable, a Wayback Machine archive) and found no phosphorus line item at all. Some brands may share a figure if you contact them directly.

Separately, 5 dog products (Mishone Senior, Kono Kono no Gohan, Dog Food Osakana Senior, Canagan Dental Dog Food, Basashi Shizenzukuri) haven't had their nutrition figures confirmed yet, so they're not included in either table. We'll add them once confirmed.

Why the reporting basis differs

Even for the same "phosphorus" figure, the basis it's reported on varies by brand.

Royal Canin's official site separates "guaranteed analysis" from "analysis value" by item, and reports phosphorus and calcium as an "analysis value" outside its 5 guaranteed items (crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, crude ash, and moisture). Hill's discloses figures as a "dry matter analysis" — converted to remove moisture rather than reported as-packaged. Mishone Adult Dog Food (Small Breed) is likewise reported on a dry-matter basis. A moisture-included figure and a moisture-adjusted figure will show different percentages for the same product.

Where the tables above show "Not stated," the brand's site didn't specify which basis it used. Because the basis may differ, we don't recommend comparing these figures directly against other products.

Frequently asked questions

Does choosing a lower-phosphorus food protect my cat or dog’s kidneys?

This article alone can’t tell you that. Phosphorus is one data point, but the reporting basis differs by brand, and whether it suits your pet depends on their constitution and any existing condition. If your pet’s kidney values are a concern, talk to your regular vet before switching foods.

Where can I find a product’s phosphorus number?

It sometimes appears in the ingredient/analysis panel on a brand’s official site (guaranteed analysis, analysis value, etc.). What we could confirm, and the reporting basis for each, is listed in the tables on this page. Where a product isn’t in the table, its ingredient panel simply didn’t include a phosphorus figure.

How is this different from a prescription/therapeutic diet?

A prescription diet is nutritionally adjusted for a specific medical condition and used under veterinary guidance. This page compares only standard, over-the-counter foods — prescription lines (Royal Canin Veterinary Diet, Hill’s Prescription Diet, etc.) aren’t included.

What is the Ca:P ratio?

It’s the ratio of calcium to phosphorus content. Among the brands we could confirm, official figures were: Mogwan 1.4, Canagan Senior 1.72, Acana 1.36, Orijen 1.27, Nutro Natural Choice Small Breed Senior 1.25, Nutro Supremo Senior 1.5, and Mishone Small Breed 1.31. As with phosphorus itself, not every brand discloses this, so a simple comparison isn’t possible.
