Dog and Cat Genetic Testing: What It Can and Can’t Tell You

Dog and cat genetic testing (idenshi kensa, 遺伝子検査) tells you whether a pet was born with a genetic tendency toward certain conditions. It is not a diagnosis of whether the pet currently has that condition. Because genes don't change over a pet's lifetime, testing only needs to be done once. Consumer kits start at ¥5,500 for Pontely and ¥4,950 for VEQTA (as of August 2026).

"What is my pet likely to be prone to, later on?" is a common reason owners look into genetic testing. The test works by swabbing the inside of the cheek and checking whether a pet was born with a genetic tendency toward specific conditions. It's sometimes recommended as part of end-of-life planning while a pet is still well, but you'll also find plenty of people online saying it "isn't worth it." Here we separate out what the testing can and can't actually tell you.

What it can tell you

Genetic testing detects whether a pet carries the gene variant behind a single-gene condition — a condition caused by one specific gene, rather than several genes or environmental factors combined. Pontely's official FAQ states: "at present, most conditions that can be tested for are single-gene conditions."

Results are reported in three categories: clear, carrier, and affected. Per Pontely's official FAQ:

The Japan Kennel Club (JKC, supervised by Professor Osamu Yamato of Kagoshima University's Joint Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) states that around 700 hereditary conditions have been identified in dogs, with the causal gene variant identified for more than 200 of them — a number that continues to grow as veterinary science advances.

What it can't tell you

Genetic testing has clear limits. JKC itself states: "it is not possible to clear every hereditary condition through this testing."

And even a carrier or affected result doesn't guarantee the condition will develop. Asked whether an "affected" result always leads to the condition, Pontely's official FAQ answers: "Not necessarily. The timing of onset for an affected pet varies by individual, and some pets never develop the condition at all."

JKC makes the same point: "deliberately excluding a healthy dog that tests as a carrier is contrary to animal welfare principles. There's nothing wrong with keeping a carrier as a pet." Reading too much into a single result, rather than the whole picture, is worth avoiding.

Why some call it "pointless" — and why others still test

Searching around, you'll find people who say genetic testing "isn't worth it." Their reasoning generally comes down to three points:

These three points line up closely with the limits described above — the skepticism isn't unfounded.

Even so, Pontely's official FAQ addresses the "if it can't cover everything, what's the point" question directly:

"We hear often from owners, after a hereditary condition develops, who say: 'I wish I'd had it tested. I wish I'd known the possibility beforehand.' Not every hereditary condition has an identified causal gene yet, but for the ones that can be tested, we believe there's value — from a preventive-care standpoint — in knowing while your pet is still healthy, so you can go on living alongside them with that awareness."

Their position, in short: "you can't know everything, but there's still value in knowing what you can." Whether that's convincing enough is a personal call. Some owners test for peace of mind; others decide not to. Both are ordinary choices.

Does it matter more for senior pets?

Since genetic testing checks an inherited trait that doesn't change, testing a senior pet gives the same result as testing them earlier in life. Still, knowing "conditions this pet may be prone to" while they're healthy can help you focus your day-to-day observation.

For example, if a result flags a condition as carrier or affected, you could watch more closely for that condition's early warning signs. This isn't a medical guarantee of prevention — it's simply a way to narrow down what to watch for. Regardless of test results, any concerning change is still worth raising with your regular vet.

Among consumer kits usable at home without a clinic visit, Pontely and VEQTA were the only two providers where we could confirm pricing from their own official sites.

Pontely's kits are organized by breed, testing a vet-recommended set of conditions in priority order across three tiers: Starter (1 item), Suggest (2 items), and Health (3 items). VEQTA lets you pick individual items to test, offers a 6-item bundle, and also has a Shiba Inu-specific panel.

OrivetJapan and Anicom Parfait also come up in searches for this kind of testing, but we weren't able to confirm pricing on their official pages this time — Orivet's primary page wasn't directly accessible, and Anicom Parfait requires a direct inquiry. Check each company's official site before applying.

How testing works

The sample collection method is the same across consumer kits, and no clinic visit is needed.

Because a pet's genetic makeup doesn't change over its lifetime, one test is enough. Pontely's official FAQ, asked how often testing should be repeated, answers simply: "since this tests your pet's genes, once is sufficient."

Testing through a veterinary clinic

Genetic testing can also be done through a veterinary clinic, though we didn't find any clinic sites listing it as a standalone, priced in-house service. In practice, a clinic typically collects a sample (such as blood) and sends it to an outside specialist lab.

This differs from consumer kits like Pontely and VEQTA, which skip the clinic entirely and publish pricing upfront. We weren't able to confirm typical clinic-route pricing this time — if you're curious, asking your regular vet directly is the most reliable way to find out.

Frequently asked questions

Is dog and cat genetic testing pointless?

It has real limits: it can't tell you about conditions outside its test panel, it can't account for environmental factors, and it isn't a substitute for a regular health checkup. That said, Pontely's official position is that knowing which conditions your pet may be prone to has value from a preventive-care standpoint, even with those limits. It's not an all-knowing test that covers every possible condition — deciding whether to test is really about whether that trade-off makes sense to you. Choosing not to test is a perfectly normal choice too.

At what age can a pet be tested?

Since a pet's genes don't change from birth, the result would in principle be the same whether tested as a puppy/kitten or later in life. That said, we weren't able to confirm each provider's official minimum age for testing this time — check with the provider directly before applying.

Can mixed-breed dogs and cats be tested?

According to a general inquiry to Pontely, testing itself is possible for mixed breeds. However, for breeds outside the panel's covered list, there's less published data on how a given mutation manifests, so some results may be withheld.

What should I do if the result comes back 'carrier'?

A carrier has one copy of the relevant gene variant; whether it leads to the condition depends on the specific condition. Both Pontely and the Japan Kennel Club (JKC) state that carrier status doesn't guarantee the condition will develop. JKC also states that deliberately excluding a healthy carrier dog from breeding or ownership decisions would run against animal welfare principles. If you're concerned, it's a good idea to bring the results to your regular vet.

Can genetic testing replace a regular health checkup?

No. Genetic testing looks at inherited predisposition — whether a pet was born with a tendency toward a condition — not whether it currently has that condition. Pontely's own site states that its results don't guarantee accuracy or completeness. It's best treated as a separate piece of information, not a substitute for regular checkups or vet visits.
