About the ashes

How to use this result

The amount shown isn't necessarily everything you'll pay. Municipal figures come from what's stated on official pages; private figures come from the official rates of 9 Tokyo companies (around 5kg, checked July–August 2026). Private companies in particular sometimes publish only a starting price — only 3 of the 9 clearly disclosed an all-inclusive total with no extras.

So before comparing numbers, it's worth asking "what's the total, with no extras?" first — it saves you from second-guessing later. Pricing details and company-by-company differences are inCremation costs and Choosing a provider.

If you're not sure where to start

If you don't know which company to call first, a nationwide referral service that gathers quotes from multiple providers is one option. Before you commit, always confirm the all-inclusive total, with no extras.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper — municipal or private?

In most cases, the municipal route costs less. But municipal cremation is almost always communal, meaning your pet is cremated with others, and the ashes are not returned. You also can’t attend. If you want the ashes back, that means private individual cremation, which costs more than the municipal route. The choice comes down to price versus getting the ashes back.

If I enter my pet's weight, do I also get a private-company price?

No. The private rates we've confirmed are the official rates of 9 Tokyo companies for a pet around 5kg. Weight brackets are drawn differently by each company (5kg and under, 2–5kg, 1–5kg, 6kg and under, and so on), so the same weight can fall into a different bracket depending on the company. We use the weight you enter to check the municipal-side conditions, and to tell you what to ask a private company. For the actual price, call and ask, "My pet is X kg — which bracket does that put me in?"

Can I just pay whatever price the tool shows?

Don't take it at face value. Municipal rates reflect what's stated on official pages, but they can change. Some private companies publish only a starting price — of the 9 we checked, only 3 clearly disclosed an all-inclusive total with no extras. Always confirm the total before you book.

My city isn't in the list

This list covers cities and Tokyo's special wards only — towns and villages aren't included. If you live in a town or village, call your local environment or sanitation office and ask three things: the pickup and drop-off fees, whether the ashes are returned, and any weight or size conditions. If your local office can't help, a private company can be reached from anywhere in Japan.
